Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy was developed by Michael White and David Epston, and believes people are the experts of their own lives. We believe people are the experts of their own lives. The problem is the problem, and you are you. Throughout our lives, we absorb stories from our families, our communities, and our histories. Narrative therapy looks at how gender, race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, health, and community impart or impose narratives that define our identity. We believe people have the skills, strengths, and competencies to discover the answers to the problems they are facing.
Sara, what does being a Narrative Therapist mean to you?
As a Narrative therapist, I pay attention to the stories you tell. I listen for your strengths and point out patterns of thought and behavior. I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship and holding space for you to become the best person you can be as well as for who you are today. The journey of discovery is so much fun, so there is a lot of laughter, as well tears when we encounter wounds. And that’s okay. Both are welcome and necessary.
When we step into session together, you will lead the way with what is important to you. I connect patterns, themes, and recurring stories. Sometimes, that looks like me challenging where the responsibility for a thought or feeling comes from. Other times it can look like me asking a series of questions. One of my biggest gifts is that I am curious. I want to know you and your heart more. I am also very human, which leads to a lot of humor and silliness too. I believe creating a relationship where we can laugh together is important for creating a sense of trust and safety. And if something doesn’t feel okay or right, I want your feedback! I am here to empower you and remind you that you are in charge in our sessions.
